At the start of 2024, my friend, artist Victoria Cassinova, asked if she could use one of my self portraits as the basis for a new piece of art commissioned by Artists for Democracy 2024, an campaign spearheaded by People for the American Way and led by none other than artists Shepard Fairey and Carrie Mae Weems.

Victoria wanted to make something that spoke to the current fight around Women’s reproductive rights. After chatting about what that meant to us, we settled on a theme of Power. The final piece shows the (Republican) elephant choking me…choking us. But in the end we remain in power — resilient in the face of oppression.
